My dear friend Kira Del Rosario has been supporting my work in Baseco Compound by sending me clothes and other usable items from the US. On her birthday November 17, the Balikbayan box arrived here in Manila. With her permission, we sold some contents of the box so that we can gather funds to build a second deep well in Baseco which is going to help address the water insecurity of its residents. Some fellow researchers also donated cash for us to hold a small party for the children. Today’s event is a product of the good hearts of people who would like to share their blessings to others even in the smallest ways.

Thank you to Dr Arlen Ancheta, Maricar SantosArabella San Agustin Mejorada, Amirah Banda, Karl Tan, Frances Faye Rivera Gutierrez, Jeremiah Opiniano, Clarence Batan, and Maam Carol for supporting our project.

Thank you to my junior and senior research assistants and students. Your support has made this project a reality. I am very proud of the persons that you are becoming.

Thank you UST RCCESI for allowing me and my team to do this for our community. We are closing your chapter as a research center with much kindness shared to our partner community.

This is the well that serves roughly 20 households. The water gathered from here is being used for washing dishes, bathing, and rinsing clothes. Soraya (woman in the upper left photo) made it for herself and he neighbors. She has allowed us to rebuild this well, make it deeper and larger. Through our sales, we were able to gather PhP 7500 ($170) which we will use to rebuild this well. The construction of the well will be facilitated by our partner, Ate Marie who is featured on the upper right photo

The items that were not sold were given to our women research partners. The ladies were very happy as they say, “may pang pasko na kami! We have something to wear for christmas!”.

One of the three wells that we constructed in Baseco Compound to alleviate the water insecurity of the residents. Thank you#JCIManila for your support. Here is Kuya Lino, our community partner, who built it in his spare time being a fulltime mussels collector. The children who asked to be part of the photo are part of the families who will directly benefit from this free water source.

What a wonderful Christmas for the residents of my research site in Baseco Compound. Through the help of our local partners, the well that we raised money for by selling pre-loved items is almost complete. This well will serve no less than 20 households. I was informed by my research assistants that the locals are using it already and have been thanking them profusely. Thank you again to everyone who donated their items for this cause. Happy Holidays indeed!

This is Ate Marie. She is our local research partner. she has been helping us manage our projects like the toilet and well that we funded early this year.

On December 16, 2015 I have asked for donations from all of you to allow me to help young children of Baseco to have access to nebulizers. I initially intended to install three nebulizers in the blocks where I was working. However, the outpouring of support for this goal has allowed me to install six nebulizers in three blocks, complete with medicines.

With the remaining funds, my team and I decided to install a public toilet and well in one of the blocks that will cater to about 25 families. We also organized a medical mission today that served a total of 242 individuals.

I cannot thank you enough for your donations for Baseco. The following pictures attest to the impact of your trust and the kindness of your hearts.

This is truly a meaningful hearts’ day for us and the people of Baseco.

On the left is the well from which water is taken to flush the toilet that is on the right. Some families use the water in the well for various household chores. This allows families to save up to P35.00 per day as most of them buy water from a nearby water refilling station. The toilet will serve about 25 families in the Aplaya area who do not have private toilets, a luxury in this area.
